If you're doing Handbrake rips, then you will see a big improvement with a GPU that supports Intel Quick Sync or the AMD alternative. I put in a 2080 hoping that it would be better at transcoding, but I never really saw any difference. Plex is poor at on the fly transcoding, particularly with 4K content (which I've never been able to watch remotely without continual hiccups). I'm often running into the problem where I have to retire older drives in favor of higher capacity ones. I have a large PC case and a variety of external drive cases (like the Yottermaster) that hold 5 drives.

If noise isn't an issue, I'd suggest getting a big external hard drive unit so you never have to think about it again. I have a regular PC case, even though I've got access to some older free rackmount servers as they're just too loud. Given that you're going to be spending a bundle on hard drives (I'd recommend the 18TBs at this point) I'd suggest spending around $500 on the processor (which usually buys you the best reasonable solution packed with cores) and a good power supply. This is a timely subject as I've been working on my server over the weekends, and I've been running a home server for years.

I am thinking I have to run windows for all this? Or maybe unraid with windows as a virtual machine. Do I need to transcode to a compressed version prior? Or can something like kodi, plex, Emby, infuse loaded on this server handle streaming these uncompressed 1:1 rips on the fly and send it over the network? I also assume that transcoding on the fly would be a breeze for a high end NVidia card?īut then that leaves the question of streaming to the Apple TV’s. Not sure what app I would use for the front end player on the PC though to access the library in a nice looking fashion like infuse, etc. From there, I can easily distribute the video stream into a 4k video matrix and then send it to every tv in the house. Or can I actually play with hdr, Dolby vision, atmos, 3D, etc just like I was playing a disc in a disc player? If I build this server as dual purpose, both with a large drive Array and a high end Nvidia GPU and use the hdmi out on the card, will I still see limitations like all the alternatives seem to have. That being said, I certain cases, I also want to be able to watch this movie collection with exact same quality and audio formats as if I was putting a physical disc in the UHD player. I realizes most players have constraints. Plex is so popular but gotta admit I’m not super huge on interface. It’s become my main method for viewing everything. Long story short I want to stream this movie collection to Apple TV’s I have all over home. Processor will either be a 12th i9 intel or Xeon processor. I’ve been spending the last two days researching about 8 hours a day. Total budget for it up to about 4 grand I guess.

Basically I am starting from scratch for the server.
